Burial arrangements

The family of a deceased person must own a burial plot in the Grove Street Cemetery before burial arrangements can be made. If the family does not already own a plot, it can purchase a plot by calling the cemetery office at (203) 787-1443. The office is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The family will need to select a funeral director. Most funeral home personnel in the New Haven area are acquainted with the Grove Street Cemetery and will be familiar with its procedures for making burial arrangements. It is the responsibility of the funeral home’s personnel to work with the cemetery to complete the burial plans.

Funeral directors from outside the New Haven area should call cemetery’s superintendent, Jacob S. Jennings, at (203) 787-1443 to make arrangements for a burial.

The purchase and installation of vaults, headstones, footstones, and/or family monuments are the responsibility of the deceased’s family. The cemetery’s staff is available for guidance and can provide a list of local firms that deal in cemetery monuments.
