Record of Burial
Johnson, David S.
David S. Johnson was born David Alling Johnson on February 14, 1826 in Orange , CT. The “S.” was either added/used later or was a transcription error by the military. The marble headstone also mistakenly lists him as having served in the 43rd CT Volunteers. In fact, he served in the 43rd New York Volunteers-there was no 43rd CT Volunteers.
His parents were Solomon Johnson and Esther Punderson Johnson. In 1849, David followed his older brother, Solomon Punderson Johnson, to the goldfields in El Dorado County California, but would later return to enlist in the Union Army as a private in New York in September of 1861.
He was wounded in the battle at Rappahannock Station, Virginia on November 9, 1863, returned to New Haven and subsequently died of his wounds on August 6, 1864. Discussion of his wounds, treatment and death-along with those of many others- is contained in the book “Medical and Surgical History of the War of Rebellion”.
David also had a brother 1st Lt. William Holt Johnson (b. Oct. 19, 1828) who resided in New Haven with his wife Hannah Jerusha Shew Johnson and their two children.
